A suspect produced before the Mahara Magistrate Mahinda Prabath Ranasinghe in connection with the robbery of a stock of gems valued at Rs 5 million from a gem trader by storming into his house posing as a vehicle seizer and taking away the van which contained the gems was released on Rs 50,000 personal bail and ordered to appear in Court on March 15 next year. The suspect named Rajitha Vasana Amarasinghe was also ordered to submit his correct address to Court. Four others M Jiffrey Mohamed, Faisar Mohamed Ahamajad, Thushara Rangika Lakshan Jayatilleke and M G Mohamed Nizar also appeared in court in this connection.
Kadawatha Police produced the suspects in Court following a complaint made by R H M Shanthi Rajaguru of Ranweli Place, Kadawatha. Kadawatha Police filing the plaint against the suspects submitted to Court that the main suspect Rajitha Vasana Amarasinghe had misled Court by providing a bogus address. Investigations also revealed that the main suspect had a permit issued by the National Gem and Jewellery Authority to retain gems worth Rs 1 million in his possession. Police said they are conducting investigations to arrest five suspects in this connection.
