Thalatha to take legal action against JO

Foreign Employment Minister Thalatha Athukorala yesterday said she will institute legal action against those members of the Joint Opposition (JO) who had filed a complaint with the Bribery Commission on December 7 against her.

She said a group of JOint Opposition members led by MP Mahindananda Aluthgamage had accused her of causing a loss of Rs.1,500 million to the government by introducing an insurance scheme for those persons migrating for jobs in Kuwait.

“I will go to Courts against Mahindananda Aluthgamage and his team for these false claims, and will seek to claim Rs 1,500 million from them for the damage they have caused on my personal life as well as my political career,” the minister said. Athukorala was speaking at a Foreign Employment Ministry press conference.

I have already submitted a letter through my lawyers to the Commissioner of the Bribery Commission, requesting that they speed up investigations concerning as regards the accusations concerned.

“I know that there was an income of Rs 12 million gained through the insurance scheme concerned. I do not know that there was any loss as such to the tune of Rs 1,500 million as they had put it,” she said.
