‘Certain factions spreading false statements’

Certain media personnel have no proper information of the new Constitution, but are questioning politicians like parrots, Kandyan Heritage, Public Enterprise Development and Kandy Development Minister Lakshman Kiriella said.

He said they should at least have read the series of proposals that have been presented on the new Constitution before questioning politicians.

The Minister was speaking to the media in Pilimatalawa yesterday.

“Most parties who are trying to build an unnecessary fear in the people’s mind on the new Constitution have no proper understanding of it. They are trying to take political advantage through such baseless statements,” he said.

According to the Minister, so far, neither a new Constitution nor a draft has been formed. But, some parties with vested interests are spreading false statements saying that the government is taking steps to bring an unfriendly Constitution.

Minister Kiriella also emphasised that the United National Party would never allow any change in the unitary status of the country and the foremost place given to Buddhism in the Constitution.
