Archbishop of Colombo His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith yesterday requested all Catholic schools to remain closed and churches not to conduct Sunday masses until further notice due to the prevailing condition in the country.
The statement was issued by His Eminence’s Media Spokesperson Rev. Edmond Tillakaratne, “The scheduled date for the schools to open was May (6).
However, His Eminence has requested all Catholic schools in the Western Province to remain closed till further notice due to the country’s security situation.”
He further added all Masses and Sunday Masses will be cancelled in the Western Province Catholic churches, due to the prevailing security concerns.
On Easter Sunday (21) multiple bombings occurred in the country in churches and luxury hotels, killing more than 250 and injuring 500 people.
Country wide security operations are being conducted with a large number of suspects arrested in connection with the attacks. Various types of weapons and swords have been recovered during search operations in several areas.
The country is on high alert after warnings of a possible attack in the days to come.
