The Meteorology Department has warned that inclement weather conditions would prevail over many parts of the country until the 27th of this month due to the Northeast Monsoon conditions. Prevailing showery conditions over the north and eastern parts of the country is likely to heighten if not continue.
In a communiqué issued by the Disaster Management Centre, warned that showers or thundershowers would occur in the North, North-Central, East, Southern and Uva Provinces particularly after 2 p.m. While heavy showers of about 100-150mm are likely in parts of Trincomalee, Batticaloa, Ampara, Monaragala, Badulla and Polonnaruwa districts.
Meanwhile, heavy showers of around 100mm are likely in Mullaitivu, Vavuniya, Anuradhapura, Ratnapura, Kegalle, Nuwara Eliya, Galle, Matara, Kalutara, Colombo, Gampaha and Mannar districts.
Wind speeds are expected to pick up to 40-50 kmph at times in the central hills, Northern, North-Central, Southern and North Western Provinces. Misty conditions with low visibility is also expected in the Western and Sabaragamuwa Provinces particularly in the mornings, motorists have been advised.
The public is requested to take precautionary measures to minimize damages caused by heavy winds or lighting during thunder showers.
