Bathiudeen files FR against cremation

Leader of Sri Lanka’s All Ceylon Makkal Congress (ACMC) Rishad Bathiudeen and several former MPs have filed a Fundamental Rights Petition in the Supreme Court seeking an order staying the operation of gazette notification issued to cremate the corpses of Muslim persons who died of COVID-19.

The petitioners alleged that rules relating to dispose the bodies of suspected Muslim victims of COVID-19 are contrary to the method practiced by followers of Islamic Faith.

The petitioners have cited Minister of Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine, Director General of Health Services of the Ministry of Health and Indigenous Medical Services, Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Indigenous Medical Services, and the Attorney General as respondents.
