Tri-Services team to present detailed report on CDS General Bipin Rawat's death today

New Delhi:

The Tri-Services Investigation Team headed by Air Marshal Manvendra Singh, who is probing the cause of the helicopter crash of Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat, will give a detailed presentation to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday.

According to sources, the

helicopter of

CDS

General Bipin Rawat

had hit a mountain amid dense clouds.

General Bipin Rawat

‘s wife and 12 other servicemen were also killed in the accident.

Giving details of the accident, defense sources said that the Mi-17V5 helicopter was flying over the mountains, keeping an eye on the railway line, when it suddenly plunged into dense clouds. The helicopter was flying at a very low altitude and knowing the terrain it appears that the crew decided to cross the clouds instead of landing and in the process hit a mountain.

Since all the crew members were in the ‘Master Green’ category, it appears that they believed they would escape the situation as they did not report any emergencies to the ground stations. The ‘Master Green’ category is given to the best pilots of the transport planes and helicopter fleets of the three armies as they are pilots who can land or take off even in low visibility.

Sources said that the TRAI Services Investigation Team has also recommended some modifications in the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for helicopters carrying senior military officers. One of their recommendations is that future crew members should have a mix of ‘Master Green’ and other categories of pilots so that they can seek help from ground stations if needed.
